Man, if there's something ANN readers, forum lurkers, and I especially screwed the pooch on was sleeping on this show during the summer season because this was one hell of a surprise for me. And I can't blame them since past Bang Dream anime just felt like you need to play the mobile game to get an appreciation out of it, and I am thankful MyGO exist so anyone can watch it without having too much past knowledge of the franchise.

I feel like there's a form-follows-function thing with SANZIGEN's animation here, because there are a few things in MyGO that are actually better for being animated in 3D. Specifically, the extraordinary third episode, which focuses entirely on Tomori and frequently uses shots from her first-person point-of-view. There's one shot where they're in the studio preparing to play and we see through Tomori's eyes as she looks in the mirror, seeing herself and the other band girls around her. And then the great use of the effect is in the scene where CRYCHIC breaks up, a moment we've already seen in the first episode with conventional third-person shots and editing, but now it's only from Tomori's POV as she looks around the room, finding only the back of Wakaba's head as she laments that she never enjoyed a single moment of being in the band. With traditional animation, POV through a head turn would be hard to do, but here it's natural, effective, and aesthetically appropriate. Well done.

That said, as a long-time BanG Dream fan, I have no idea where someone would go from here if their entry point is It's MyGO!!!!! The first anime season is a slog, the second is a victory lap for the mobile game, the third is the low-stakes rise of RAISE A SUILEN, and the shorts (Pico and Pastel*Life) are spoofs and comedy. Maybe the Roselia movies are in the ballpark with their character work, particularly Sayo coming out of her self-imposed isolation, but it's a fraction of what It's MyGO!!!!! aspires to.

I had no prior knowledge of the BanG Dream franchise, but I kept being intrigued by the screenshots of MyGO being shared on Twitter to the point I finally checked it out just before the 10th episode dropped and immediately fell in love. Astonishingly good character drama and animation direction. This series has convinced me of the value of the 3D animation, as described in the above comment, because there are amazing things that just wouldn't be feasible in 2D, at least not on a television anime. And the characterization has a depth and nuance rarely seen. Anyway, MyGO has secured a place among my all-time favorite media, and I have high hopes for the Ave Mujica sequel.

First time BanG Dream series for me and my goodness was I blown away. I decided to watch the show on a whim because a couple of the ANN writers on Twitter were live tweeting the first few episodes. I'm insanely glad they did and I don't think any of us knew what we were in store for. It quickly became one of the shows I looked forward to watching each week. Even after the last episode, I find myself thinking about it in addition to listening to the music from the series. I've also managed to re-watch this series already and it's crazy how well the machinations are done so subtly. I've also watch episode 10 four times by itself because it's probably my favorite episode from any show this year, so far.

This series, likely my AOTS, still does not garner the level of respect or viewership it deserves. Understandably so, I suppose. The article and earlier comments touch on it. As much as I tell people about it, I'm usually met with reluctance due to prior seasons, people thinking it's an idol show or thinking it's going to be D4DJ but rock music, or some combination. That's why I'm so glad this review exists.

However, those I've managed to convince to give MyGO a go are shocked by how good it is. The story, the characters, the music, the animation all come together to create an experience that feels special in different ways for different people. If you've ever felt unwanted, abandoned, lonely, ashamed or lost, this show is for you. It's cathartic.

If people aren't picking it up to watch before the Fall shows start, it's likely going to be one of the best shows most people won't watch... until maybe the Ave Mujica series begins. And if the world of Ave Mujica is as dark as that last moment of this season was, we are in for a potentially twisted ride.
