Seven Seas Entertainment announced on Wednesday that it has licensed Ena Moriyama's The Count of Monte Cristo (Monte Cristo Hakushaku) manga, and will release the series in one deluxe trim volume on December 19.
The manga adapts Alexandre Dumas' classic adventure novel The Count of Monte Cristo (Le Comte de Monte-Cristo). In the novel, Edmond Dantès, a merchant sailor in the early 19th century, is betrayed by his friends and colleagues. He loses all his possessions and is sent to prison. After escaping, he finds treasure in the island of Monte Cristo that his inmate entrusted to him. With the wealth, he reinvents his identity as the Count of Monte Cristo, re-enters high society, and plots revenge on those who wronged him.
Moriyama launched the manga in Hakusensha's Young Animal Arashi in October 2014, and ended the series in September 2015. The original French novel was released in 1844, and has since been adapted multiple times into various media. Samurai Gun creator Kazuhiro Kumagai also penned a manga adaptation of the novel in 2012. Gankutsuou, a TV anime adaptation directed by Mahiro Maeda and animated by Gonzo, premiered in Japan in 2004.
