Lisa, Homer Catch 'Peekemon' in The Simpsons' Pokémon Go Parody

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

The "Looking for Mr. Goodbart" episode of The Simpsons premiered on Fox on Sunday. In the episode, Bart develops a relationship with a retirement home resident named Phoebe. When she goes missing, he suspects she has gone into the woods to end her own life. Homer and Lisa assemble a group of people who play a thinly disguised version of Pokémon Go to help with the search for Phoebe. In the below episode preview, which Fox began streaming on Friday, shows Homer and Lisa venturing out to look for "Peekemon" and the old woman.

Lisa sings a parody of "Pokémon Theme," the opening theme song for the English dub of the first season of the Pokémon television anime series. Observant Studio Ghibli fans will also notice that Lisa rides a creature closely resembling the Shishigami forest spirit from Princess Mononoke.

The Simpsons has incorporated references to Japanese popular culture in the past. The show has included tributes to Death Note, Godzilla, and various popular anime.

The Pokémon Go app launched in select countries including the United States on July 6, and has since launched in more than 50 countries. The game recently held an egg-themed event for Easter. The game held a water festival event and released Shiny Magikarp and Shiny Gyarados in March.
