Watch Power Rangers Take on Voltron in Live-Action Fan Short

posted on by Eric Stimson
Clash of the transforming titans

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Voltron share several similarities: both are American action shows created from Japanese templates, and both involve teams of young mecha pilots combining into a single, giant, fearsomely powerful mecha. So it's only natural to ask: who would win in a fight, Power Rangers' Megazord or Voltron? Danny Shepherd and Jeremy Le at the pop culture-oriented YouTube channel ismahawk have answered that question in the most awesome way: a live-action short in their Minute Match-ups series.

While the tone is light-hearted and the dialogue often pokes fun at the situation, it is respectful of the original franchises and includes several references for devoted fans. (Note that the battle takes place, fittingly, over the Pacific.) The actors include familiar personalities like Greg Miller of the video game website Kinda Funny and professional wrestler Xavier Woods.

If you're unconvinced by the battle's result, Tyler of The Imaginary Axis (a YouTube channel that answers pop culture-related questions with science) breaks down Megazord and Voltron's respective attributes and how they would affect a hypothetical clash. Shepherd and Le also promise to post two making-of videos soon, one for the live-action segments and one for the CGI.

While they are both old franchises, Power Rangers and Voltron have returned to popularity recently with the recent animated series Voltron: Legendary Defender and the upcoming live-action film Power Rangers. Interestingly, a 2011 live-action fan short, Voltron: The End, initially sparked interest in a full-fledged live-action Voltron TV series. The team behind the short — which includes Greg Aronowitz, the executive producer of Power Rangers SPD — produced production designs and scripts before the project was put on hold to make way for Voltron: Legendary Defender. Aronowitz is hopeful that the idea will be revived, and asks fans to follow him and his coworkers, Alex Albrecht and Barnyard FX, on Instagram and Twitter to show their support.

A rejected Power Rangers film pitch in 2015 was also inspired by a similarly dark live-action fan film posted online.
