Godzilla Gets a New Job as Tokyo's Tourism Ambassador
posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
The Tokyo Government is looking to put Godzilla's destructive history behind them and is offering the giant lizard the opportunity to turn over a new leaf — as long as he brings in the funds. The former nuclear menace was promoted to tourism ambassador and made an honorary citizen of Tokyo's Shinjuku ward. A giant Godzilla head, spotted atop Kabuki-cho's TOHO Cinemas Shinjuku, was unveiled last month. A ceremony was held at the location with Godzilla, Shinjuku mayor Kenichi Yoshizumi, and TOHO executive Minami Ichikawa. The mayor commented on the belief that any location destroyed in a Godzilla film will actually became fortuitous in real life.
Evangelion director Hideaki Anno is the chief director and writer of TOHO's upcoming Godzilla film, the first new Japanese one in the franchise in 12 years. Shinji Higuchi, the director of Japan Sinks, Nobō no Shiro, and the upcoming live-action Attack on Titan films, is directing the new film and serving as special effect director as well.
Gareth Edwards and Legendary Pictures' Hollywood film opened last year.
