OK, a live action Patlabor TNG with Mamoru Oshii. This promises to be interesting.

The first two movies were masterpieces, and the lack of Oshii's involvement in WXIII was quite apparent in the final product.

That said, the man cannot do live-action. Most of his live-action films (Avalon, Assault Girls etc) were just an extension/translation of the anime style which simply does not work in live-action at all. That's the same mentality which seems to be quite pervalent with many anime directors branching out to live-action and the end products were always inadequate.

It would be alright if Oshii serves in a producer/writer/consultant capacity, but they should really hire a genuine (and ofc reputable) film director for it.

That 3rd movie was not bad. It's biggest issue was that it was billed as a Patlabor movie, when the Pato characters only had guest star or cameo sized appearances.

And I think WXIII would work better as a live action film then most of the other Pato stuff. Japanese live action films just don't have the budget to make giant robots look good.

While I was rather disappointed by Assault Girls, I thought that Avalon worked extraordinarily well, and I've always been satisfied by it. What elements of Avalon did you dislike?

Maybe it won't work out, but I'm willing to let him give it a try. Patlabor's my favorite anime, so my hopes are (probably far too) high. We'll just have to see what happens (if it actually happens). ^^

The choice of medium was the problem imo. Avalon was by no means a poorly made film, but it would've benefited so much if it were animated because one tends to pay more attention to the visuals and the details when it comes to animation, whereas with live-action you'd care more about the pace of the story and the story itself as dictated by that pace rather than the cinematography/scene composition. As such, the sort of style Oshii employs would come off brilliantly in anime but it would be rather boring and tedious in live-action.

Still, that's not to say the anime style doesn't jibe with live-action, but one would have to be experienced in filmmaking to figure out what works and what doesn't and to actually know how to create new and exciting visuals that match the narrative without looking weird or out of place.

Hope I don't come off as a snob for saying this... :p

I'd have more confidence in the series if Kazunori Ito was scripting it, I can't help but think he's the reason a lot of Oshii's works are enjoyable.

I find this an odd coincidence. We just finished processing both LE movies for our collection sometime last week. Then this week today, I just read a column on the release of the Patlabor TV series in this month's Otaku USA. I don't know why I had the feeling that they had did this but I guess not. But interesting to hear.

Pleasantly, there's been a fair amount of activity involving Patlabor recently, compared to the dearth of the same over the last few years. First, Section23 releasing the OVAs and TV Collections on Blu-ray through its Maiden Japan label, and now a live-action Patlabor project with Oshii-san's involvement. I've been double-dipping to add the former to my collection, and am eagerly awaiting the latter. I just hope the Patlabor world translates to the live-action screen well. Rendering the Patlabors as realistically as possible will go a long way to assisting with the transition, as would a gripping story. It will be interesting to see if this will be a reboot of the original story into live-action, or a completely new tale. I'm also to curious to see of Kenji Kawai will be added to the project to provide the music, as he has provided the music to all the Patlabor related animation projects.
