re: frame of reference conversation -- I kind of feel like the cerberus fight Lynzee recalled did give us a pretty concrete benchmark relative to 'The Castle'. He barely survived a fight with what amounts to a gatekeeping intro monster there, so he can reasonably infer he'd better be much stronger before he tries the depths of that dungeon. (Still very unclear how much stronger needs to be, I guess; it's not like he fought the boss of it and survived to try again.)
A problem for me, though, is that... I don't really care that much about The Castle or his quest to cure his mom? We've barely seen the mom, and she sort of feels to me like a convenient plot-motivating prop for him more than a person. And I definitely don't invest deeply in the dungeons themselves as antagonists/obstacles, either, because we've learned nothing that gives them a sense of purpose, intention, or personality; the closest we've come is the red-haired boss knight he fought getting the barest outlines of a backstory. Which mostly leaves me wanting to see him fight with or against various other people in the show, since we actually know things about who they are as people, what their personalities and motivations are, and so forth. But, there, as James said, we've lost most concrete reference for how capable he is, and have no real reference for how strong his potential opponents/allies are. Outside of just giving them letter grades, anyway. The production quality's high enough that I'll probably still watch its next season eventually, but it feels like a lot of storytelling fundamentals are unfortunately pretty weak, so not nearly as excited as I was at first. |

I wouldn't say that it was a edgy turn. Throughout the series they were constantly showing that the humans were the true monsters. And I am not talking about our protagonist. Sung Jinwoo is not the problem, but rather all the humans that received power and abilities and let it go to their heads. Everyone that Sung Jinwoo killed deserved to die and really he didn't have much choice in the matter anyway. At least, not without severe repercussions for him and the ones he cares about. The dungeon system, for a lack of better term, seems to be gamifying what needs to be done to these evil people. What are the dungeons for, who brought them over/or created them, and what is the dungeon system's end goal. Season one sets the stage, season two will be more leveling up, what is up about that island, taking out the trash, protecting what is important to him, and what the dungeon system is up too. I am ready for more. |

Will you guys talk next weeks about whatever happened to Ninja Kamui? Seriously, the rival fight was the biggest disappointment I saw in the series.

I was like that with Shield Hero but I pretty much dropped early in season 2 as it really felt like an obvious isekai due to Naofumi always being sorrounded by girls or other guys being useless in contrast to him. |

Will watch season 2 of Solo Leveling. Have read the full manhwa – at chapter 40 I started asking friends what was so good about the series (was very closing to dropping it). Great artwork, but I wanted more character depth. After chapter 60 (before 80), it finally captured me. It's unfortunate the anime struggled with the same issue during season 1.

Shield Hero is so much fun! You watch it every week and keep telling yourself, "It can't get worse, right?" and it does. You would assume that a continuation would improve upon the current formula, or at the least keep things consistent. The problem I have with Shield Hero is that, once the revenge plot is played out it gets lost in its own story. |
