It fits with the film doing the story of Kitaro’s birth, though Kitaro’s dad looks very different (bandaged and mummified) in the original manga for that.

The "new" series mentioned in the article appears to be the 2018 version. For a bit I thought there was going to be another whole Kitarou series along with this film.
