This is an interesting strategy, as it targets the advertising rather than the site. It also sets up an example of those offering advertisement revenue to sites that may be in legal trouble.
This could potentially shut down sites if used worldwide (though unlikely). I say "sites", as I'm not just talking about piracy sites, but many sites are vulnerable to this type of tactic. |

I find that 3 billion number suspect. Just read an article the other day that the entire music I dusty was estimated to be worth about 20 billion over 2021. Manga is super niche compare to that industry and this figure was based on lost revenue from 3 sites of the 100s or more That exist . I'm not even going to get into fact that studies have been done from pretty much every industry including those like film that have suggested financial impact from piracy is greatly exaggerated . But if I had to estimate the value of the Manga industry based on those numbers akamatsu should be taking over Elon musk for no 1 richest person about now, I shouldn't be reading articles about how half the anime Manga industry is below the poverty lin, and the industry as a whole would be fighting it out with us and China as the three wealthiest countries in existence .
That said I agree with the actual outcome and strategy even if some of the supporting documentation is suspect. We have seen it with stuff like Facebook how important ad and revenue streams are to sites so it's Def the way to go. Also akamatsu is the worat person to claim piracy correlates to less creativity because his works have paradoxically become nose diving in quality since the first part of negima, yet his sales have been much more successful than his earlier works like maochan love hina or the ai one he did. Not to mention the dude is marrying cosplayers a third of his age so no one is crying for him. That said of course I will always support the guy, no matter how it ages love hina always holds a special place in my heart so I'll buy snything he puts out. |

Of course those claims are as imaginary as unicorns. From September 2017 to February 2018 the site was accessed 620 million times. And that supposedly resulted in a loss of ~$3 billion. That makes it ~$5 per view. |

Yeah, the $2.9 billion dollar figure is a gross exaggeration based on the idea that every single visitor to the site would have bought the manga if the site was not available to them. It might be a bit more accurate to say that the site provided "the equivalent of $2.9 billion in services," or something to that effect.
That said, I'm super happy to see ad networks get nailed for supporting a site like this. I regularly get approached by niche ad networks looking to target anime and manga fans, and they tell me about how they are advertising on all the "biggest" anime sites. All of those sites of course being piracy sites. The actual 11 million yen fine was pretty small, but this was fine was paid to Akamatsu if I understand correctly. There's still plenty of other mangaka who might sure for their share... -t |
