Nice to see it turned out well. I think this would be more appealing if for the same price it was to own instead of just rent.
Regardless, hopefully this does well and we see others come over. I'd love to be able to see the One Piece Super Kabuki show again (and with subtitles). |

On this site and elsewhere, Western people tend to regard 2.5D as annoying, gratuitous fanservice, but the productions are actually often quite good. I'm... a really big fan of them. Particularly the Tsukipro stage plays (there are about 27 so far) and the Identity V stage plays from the same producer (based on the Chinese mobile game with the creepy-cute button eyes thing). I'm glad these are getting more notice in the West, and I'm glad someone's streaming them. I think these three were all from the same producer that does the Touken Ranbu and Prince of Tennis ones? I'm not into any of these series, but the plays are sort of connected/divided by separate producers. But, yeah, I highly recommend finding anything you can about 2.5D and asking distributors to bring them over. I feel like if enough people really got onto Crunchyroll, etc., about them, more of them could become available internationally. So please do! Movic has also set up an English youtube channel with information about their plays, and there are also "genepro" videos taken by press who are invited to preview performances of the plays. There are plenty of those on Youtube. This channel, 2.5D news, has some videos of the new Kimetsu no Yaiba stage play. ... I also just found this channel for the Black Butler musicals while searching for links. So please, watch these videos, buy streaming tickets, and ask everyone for more! Touken Ranbu has toured to Paris and India, Sailor Moon went to New York, and plenty of others have toured around Asia. .... when I was really into the Black Butler musicals about 10 years ago, I used to imagine having an English production that would tour through conventions. Maybe that will be possible if this continues to grow... |

I haven't watched this but I did see the Naruto Shippuden: Song of the Akatsuki stage spectacle when it was in cinemas in Australia. It was really impressive; the outfits looked good rather than ridiculous, the action was well done, the sets were really nice given how limited they were and it overall just looked pretty great. The songs weren't amazing but they were pretty catchy.
About all I know about the Naruto musicals is that in some performances (I don't believe it was the recorded one), Anju Inami (voice of Chika in Love Live Sunshine) played Ino. |

I've always wondered if these were like The Lion King quality stuff that wins awards from the greater Japanese theatre community and are regarded as high quality plays... or if these are pretty low quality affairs mostly made for children and franchise fans and like everyone from viewers to performers knows going in that this isn't going to be some award winning production.
Now I get to see for myself. |

Managed to catch the last showing, and really enjoyed it. Reminded me how much I had loved the series before the latter half or so of Shippuden turned me off.
I'd say Garra is probably the hardest hit by the adaptation (excluding those completely cut, of course). Without the exam arc to build him up, his normal personality becomes completely overshadowed by his half-demon personality as he spends the large majority of his stage time angrily ranting to Sasuke and Naruto. I do agree that the sand-animated manga images showing his backstory were beautifully done though. |
