So, having seen the reviews in the Fall 2023 preview guide of this I was a bit wary of the subtitles and wondered how bad it could be. The answer is real bad, it feels like watching one of those very old anime that only has google level translations and is only viewable on some dodgy site. I could get into the actual episode, but I refuse, it is not a pleasant watching experience.

The second episode had good subtitles for me, which made enjoying the episode a hell of a lot easier than last week. Anyway, the show is really good at showing the bonds between brothers and also the issues between them. It is not all fluffy, like any real family there are issues to overcome.

Man, that first episode with the horrible subs really did this series dirty. Each episode shows the highs and lows of a family trying to make the best of their situation and it is such a joy to watch. There is a conflict every now and then, but it is mostly just heartwarming fluff that feels pretty realistic in regards to the bonds between family/brothers.

Anyone in the mood for a good slice of life should give it a watch.

I'm enjoying this a lot more than I thought I would. I think it was the animation style that was putting me off. The bad subs on the first ep I could get past, having watched some Chinese gigs with similar problems. But I'm finding it more touching and relatable than I'd expected. I especially like their neighbors. In fact I think I like them more than the brothers. Smile

For how poor they claim to be they sure seem to have money for trips across the world, if the OP is to be taken at face value. Wink

Yeah, it is a lovely show due to so many heartwarming moments, though it also shows some of the issues that can happen in a family (which I like, painting a perfect picture would have felt artificial), none of it overexaggerated mind you.

I just started watching this show - I made a note to come back to it after I heard that they got that weird production issue straightened out - and I finally had time after dropping a few shows that have been borderline for a few episodes in a row. Not that they were bad, it was just getting hard to muster up the desire to watch them instead of doing something else.

Anyway, I have to say, I was surprised by how good this show was once I stopped being distracted and irritated. My initial impression was that it was a more boring version of Miname-ke, an old anime about three sisters who are making it as a family unit after their parents die. I love that show, and none of the brothers seemed as interesting as the bizarre, borderline narcissistic middle sister or the old before her time, take no prisoners little sister.

But this is a different show with its own merits. It's not as funny as Miname-ke, but it's more realistic, and when it delivers the feels, they land. It manages to be heart warming without feeling cloying or exploitive.

Glad to see someone else try the show out since the earlier issues really did it dirty. It is a grounded anime in that the characters are fairly realistic, yet it manages to feel believable and thus can hit pretty hard.

Funny that it never occurred to me that poor little eyeless Waka never told his mom either (maybe it got mentioned and I forgot - that happens a lot). And neither did Gramps or Uta! They were all so caught up in Gakuto's drama I guess they forgot. Laughing

I think the best part of this was showing that you can't get past the teacher grapevine forever.

I was kind of expecting to see it during this show and we got it: the good old cold/flu. To be fair though, it was a rather nasty one this time, if it makes you bedridden for a week or so it is a proper flu. It was nice to see the family band together.

A beautiful final episode for a great show. It sucks that the first episode had such horrible subs since that probably chased quite a few people away. A real shame given that every episode shows the realistic experiences of a lovely family making the best of their situation. If you even remotely like slice of life then the show is worth a look.

The stories were great and heartfelt, but it wasn't much to look at (though Hayato kept reminding me of Free! characters). Still every so often they'd do something that kinda blew me away with how creative or beautiful or hilarious it was.

Like when Minato and Uta were fleeing hysterically down rl city streets, which was unexpected enough by itself, and then they took a second to have a flying stag beetle lobbing in out of nowhere to smack into Uta's face (or maybe it was Minato's). Laughing Or the trip to the family grave, where again, they used rl scenery out the bus window, until they switched to the lovely charcoal art of the parents and little Gakuto at the bus stop. Surprising flourishes like that really elevated the whole series.
